Shane Iker

  •   2009 CRCA All Round Cowboy
  •   2009 CRCA Open Team Roping Heeler Champion
  •   2009 CRCA Open Rope and Tie Champion
  •   2009 CRCA Open Steer Wrestling Champion

Shane IkerShane is the CRCA 2009 All Round Cowboy, and will be back again to fiercely defend his title.

Shane started competing in 1992 in the disciplines of rope and tie, team roping, and steer wrestling. He currently holds 24 CRCA titles, winning his first in 1995. At national level he was the 1995 National Rodeo Council Rope and Tie Champion of Australia, and is the current 2009 Australian All Round cowboy. And the sport of rodeo runs pretty deep into Shane's veins.

When not competing he enjoys training junior competitors and is proud when they go onto junior and open titles. Also he takes a lot of pride in watching his 10 year old son Jordan's successes in junior roping and barrel racing events. Shane also maintains his level of fitness by training roping horses on behalf of their owners. As well he is a well-known rodeo contractor and his bucking bull Castaway is also in the finals as the CRCA Bucking bull of the year. After spectators watch Shane compete in his three disciplines, he will get to work as a pick–up man in the bucking stock competitions.

Leanne Caban

  •   2009 CRCA All Round Cowgirl
  •   2009 CRCA Open Ladies Breakaway Champion

Leanne began her rodeo career in Australia 1989. In 1997 she was selected on the Australian team to compete at the North American Rodeo Commission Finals in North Carolina, USA in Barrel Racing and Breakaway Roping.

Leanne competes in breakaway roping and barrel racing and enjoys the technical challenge of both events. Her highest achievement to date has been winning the 1995 Women's Professional Rodeo Association Australian Champion All Round Cowgirl and Breakaway Roping Champion. Winning the All Round Cowgirl title means a lot to Leanne as she feels it is a greater accomplishment to be competitive in two or more events. There is also a lot of hard work put in all year to stay ahead in both events. The Breakaway title especially means a lot to Leanne as her year in this event did not start out as good as she had hoped.

Leanne won her titles aboard her breakaway horse “Gattling” and her barrel racing mare “Hawk”. “Gattling” turned 17 this year and Leanne shares him with her husband Dale who uses him for calf roping. Their five year old daughter also sometimes barrel races him. He is by Traditional Roc, out of Roxana Morn and was originally bought by Leanne as a barrel racing prospect because of his bloodlines. Dale trained him as a calf roping horse and, due to the loss of his other horse, took him over as his own. “Hawk’s” registered name is 'Maggie Morn' and she also carries the great 'Morn Deck' lines on her bottom side as her grand dam. Her grandsire is the well known cutting horse 'Hank Man Leo'. She is 7 year old and this year she took out the CHBHA Fast Dash Futurity and the ABHA Qld Dual Crown Futurities. She is extra special as to Leanne as she bought “Hawk” as a 3 year old and trained her to barrel race. Dale also trained her as a calf roping/breakaway roping horse.

Cameron Milner

Cameron Milner

  •   2009 CRCA Allround Junior Champion
  •   2009 CRCA Junior Breakaway Champion

Cameron has been involved with rodeo since the age 2. His favourite event is Team roping /Heeling. Cameron's highest achievement to date was securing the APRA Australian Junior All Round title and the Pro Tour Hi Point Champion during his first year of serious competition. Winning the CRCA title meant alot to Cameron and topped off another successful year of competition.

Cameron competed on “Jack Nugget” and “Lacey” to secure his CRCA titles. “Jack” is by “Admiral Oak” and out of an unknown mare. He is 11 and was trained by Shane Iker for calf roping.

Cameron is particularly proud of his Breakaway title with it being his first year competing in the event.

Mel Irwin

  •   2010 CRCA Rodeo Queen

Mel IrwinMel is a relatively new comer to rodeo and has only been competing in CRCA events for the past 15 months after she went to a rodeo with a friend about a year ago ago, and saw the ladies barrel racing and was hooked. Prior to competing in rodeos Mel was successfully competing in endurance riding and showing horses. Now her favourite event is barrel racing as she loves the excitement and atmosphere of the event. However her highest achievement to date has been her success in securing the Rodeo Queen title for 2010.

Mel believes it is a great honour to hold the Rodeo Queen title and is looking forward to the challenges it will present in the coming year for her. During her year of reign Mel hopes to promote the CRCA and make the public more aware of what the CRCA does and encourage new members. She also hopes to encourage new members to the association by holding novice barrel horse event that would also be good for current members to introduce young horses to their rodeo careers. She also has some exciting ideas for fundraising in 2010 but isn’t giving all her secrets away just yet.

Mel won her title on her trusty steed “Ace Return”. “Ace” is “Hollywood Return” bred and is about 10 years old. Mel purchased “Ace” when she started rodeo competing from Pat and Liz O’Halloran. He enjoys barrel racing but has also had success in the show ring. In Mel's own words, “Ace is a great little horse with a huge heart”.
